Oral History and Australian Family Life

by Alistair Thomson, Emeritus Professor of History, Monash University

Alistair Thomson was born at John Baxter House, Geelong, in 1960, while his parents were living in Queenscliff.  In this talk, Alistair will outline how oral history interviews can add intimate detail and rich nuance to the writing of your family history and help to illuminate a more complex representation of the life and times of your forebears. Using examples from his own family history, including interviews with war veterans, the history of postwar migration, and his most recent history of family life and fathering, he will explore how oral histories illuminate the diverse experiences of Australian families and how family roles and relationships have, or have not, changed over time.
