Monthly Talks – “THE CONVICT PAINTERS”

Jasper Coghlan will talk about the history and restoration of the Tall Ship Alma Doepel.

Artists were among the 162,000 convicts shipped to Australia between 1788 and 1868, and they painted and sketched the landscape, natural history, people, and buildings, and brought a tinge of culture to a wild and uncivilised frontier.

The convict artists were bound together more by social experience than art. On arrival, most had to survive horrendous conditions. But they were artists, and there was so much to record. September’s guest speaker is Robert Stevens, Chairman of the Victorian Branch of the Australiana Society and his special area is Convict Artists. In 2017 Robert received the Peter Walker Fine Art Writing Award for his article Elizabeth Hudspeth, an artist in Van Diemen’s Land.  Robert has spent 50 years researching and collecting convict art and personal histories. This presentation is an overview of his work.
