Monthly Talks – The Australian Connection to the Greek Island of Lemnos from WW1

Dr Tony Whitefield, a retired educator, and his family have been connected to the Greek Island of Lemnos (also known as Limnos) for more than 100 years. He is QHM’s May speaker.

Tony has authored several historical novels inspired by Lemnos and its ancient Greek mythology and the role of ANZAC nurses based on Lemnos treating thousands of wounded soldiers from the Gallipoli Landing battlefield in 1915.

Tony and his wife Despina, whose family come from Lemnos, divide their time between homes in Melbourne, Point Lonsdale and Lemnos. He has led many tours of the island for its cultural, archaeological and historical aspects and, for Australian tourists, the Australian connection to the Gallipoli soldiers and nurses.
