Monthly Talks – A Modern Mecca: Post-War Queenscliffe
with Lesley Rose Alway.

In the 1950s and 1960s, ‘modern’ public, commercial and residential architecture transformed the Borough, embracing progress and new ideas, rather than its historic past. Whilst much has now been erased, buildings such as the Queenscliff High School, Riptide Motel, CBS Bank, RSL and Point Lonsdale Dream House are an important part of Queenscliffe’s social and architectural history. Lesley Always will present both the precursors and legacies of Queenscliff modernism to reveal a less well-known aspect of Queenscliffe’s Architectural past.

Lesley lives in the historic Fisherman’s Flat area of Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Her career has focused on arts management, cultural policy, and infrastructure. Lesley is the Chairperson of Geelong Arts Centre, currently undergoing a major redevelopment, scheduled to open in mid-2023. In 2021, Lesley completed a Master of Urban and Cultural Heritage at the University of Melbourne. It was here that she completed various research projects related to architectural heritage in Queenscliff and Geelong. More recently Lesley assisted the QHM volunteers in curating the inaugural exhibition, Queenscliffe Revealed: Hidden Histories – New Narratives, for the new Queenscliffe Historical Museum in the Queenscliffe HUB.
Previous roles include Director of Asialink Arts, Managing Director of Sotheby’s Australia, Director / CEO of Heide Museum, and Director of Arts Victoria. Lesley holds an MBA from Monash University, BA (Hons) and B.Ed. from the University of Melbourne.
