The appearance of the Coffee Palace on the hospitality landscape in the late 19th century was not just a brief entrepreneurial dream ahead of its time. It was one response to economic and social forces which had been at work since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Forces that spanned the English-speaking world and made themselves felt even as far away as the small colonial town of Queenscliff.
