Monthly Talks – “A Mabo: Memoir” & the “Voice to Parliament”
with Dr Bryan Keon-Cohen AM QC.
An insider’s comprehensive account, by the plaintiffs’ counsel Dr Bryan Keon-Cohen AM QC.
Keon-Cohen recounts Eddie Mabo’s motivations, the Murray Islanders, their culture; the lawyers and judges involved; legal aid hassles; set-backs during trial and repeated attacks by Bjelke-Petersen’s government. The poignancy of Mabo’s premature death, before final success in the High Court, and the case’s legacy.
Bryan will also briefly outline the achievements and failures of the Native Title Act (1993) enacted by the Keating Labor Government; and the current debate surrounding the proposed constitutional entrenchment of an “Indigenous Voice to Parliament”, to provide advice to the federal government. Questions will follow.
